Vishay’s New 1212 Inductors: When 3mm × 3mm Is All You’ve Got
Three millimeters by three millimeters. That’s the footprint of Vishay’s IHLP1212-EZ-1Z series of power inductors, now expanded with 24 new parts that pack inductance values from 0.22µH to 3.3µH into the same low-profile package that designers have been requesting for space-constrained commercial applications.
The series offers three profile heights — 1.2mm, 1.5mm, and 2.0mm — giving layout engineers flexibility within the same footprint. With DC resistance as low as 8.6mΩ and saturation current up to 14.3A, these parts aren’t trading performance for size. They’re proving you don’t have to.
The Construction Story: Powdered Iron, No Air Gaps
The key to the IHLP1212-EZ-1Z’s performance in such a small package is the powdered iron body that completely encapsulates the windings. This eliminates air gaps and provides magnetic shielding, which reduces crosstalk with nearby components — a meaningful benefit when you’re packing a DC/DC converter into a dense consumer product.
The composite construction also delivers strong resistance to thermal shock, moisture, and mechanical stress. For industrial and medical applications where environments are unpredictable, this durability matters.
Performance Envelope
Breaking down the numbers:
- Typical DCR: 8.6mΩ to 50.4mΩ across the 24-part series
- Inductance: 0.22µH to 3.3µH
- Saturation current: Up to 14.3A
- Heating current: Up to 11.1A
- Operating temperature: -55°C to +125°C
The parts are designed to handle high transient spikes without saturating — a critical requirement in point-of-load DC/DC converters where load steps can be abrupt.
Target Applications
Vishay lists the usual suspects: low-profile DC/DC converters for industrial, consumer, telecom, and medical markets. But the common thread across all of these is board space — or rather, the lack of it. The 1212 (3.0×3.0mm) footprint has become a de facto standard for ultra-compact power stages in everything from smart speakers to wearable medical devices.
Samples and production quantities are available with a 10-week lead time — reasonable for a Vishay product with this level of performance integration.
The Designer’s Verdict
If you’re working on a layout-constrained design and haven’t looked at the IHLP1212-EZ-1Z recently, now’s the time. The expansion to 24 parts gives you more inductance granularity than before, and the profile options let you tune for either lower height or higher current. The magnetic shielding is a genuine benefit in noisy environments.
